DIY Venthood

Hey ya’ll!! Now that Will and I have been working on more house projects, and I know there are so many questions out there about what we’ve used and how we used it, I am putting it on my schedule to do this blog at least once or twice a week! You all know how bad I am about keeping up with it so you have to hold me to it! 😂 Also, for some reason, people are having trouble viewing my videos! So I’m hoping that I can make them work this time. I can see them, but so many are telling me that you can only hear them!🤔 So if you have that problem again, please let me know!

Now let’s get to the good stuff! That beautiful Vent hood that Will built for me!

First, you need to do some searching to see what you want! Of course Pinterest and Instagram are great places to look! I’ve seen others build them in different ways, to include right over the cabinet and microwave that is usually over the stove, since the vent is already there, and then they built a hinged door over the microwave to open and close it. Or, just over the cabinet so that they didn’t have to take down storage, but I decided that I wanted it all down and he just wanted to put in his own vent. Look at all your options and decide what’s best for you! Which leads me to a major question that I am getting! What did we do with the microwave? We ended up putting it in the corner nook of our kitchen where it’s not too noticeable! That was a major question in our minds too before we just did it!

I was also tempted to take down the cabinet to the left of the vent hood and add shelving, but then it would have looked a little weird with the layout and the cabinets on the other side. So, we made it work with what we have! I do miss our open shelving in the kitchen though that we had at our other house!😩

For wood, we went with pine, it is the least expensive and still beautiful stained! He planned it out on paper and then began building it up on the wall! Because we have crown molding up top, he couldn’t attach it to the wall without taking the molding down, and that we did not want to do! So he planned it to go up to the ceiling. We were a little bit worried about the support at first, but between the studs in the wall and the cabinets themselves to hold it up, we were good! Once he had the frame up on the wall, it was too tight for him to get all the wood all the way around, so he took it down from there and built up the rest!

During this time, he started working on the vent! Luckily he knows how to do electrical work! If you don’t, please get somebody who does to do that for you! We went to Lowe’s and bought the pieces for the vent and then he cut a hole through the wall, out to our garage! Now, all of the smell goes out there instead of just circulating through the microwave and into the house the way it did! He also installed a light underneath and ordered toggle switches from Amazon in order to turn everything off and on!

Here are some pics and video throughout the process! I will also link as much as I can for you! Let me know if you have any questions! My next blog is going to be our brick backsplash so stay tuned! 🙌🏻

He used tape to plan out the shape and to measure! Also, to make sure it was what I wanted!
He began with the wood on the ceiling and worked his way down!
Here you can see the hole he made for the vent, and the wood pieces he put on the back wall to hold the vent in place!
Here, the vent is installed!
After it was framed, he brought it out to his shop in order to get the wood all the way around it! He glued, then nailed them into place!
When built and stained, he brought it back in to hang! This is the back of it that goes on the wall! We used Early American stain on it to match our butcher block island! You may notice that there are spaces at the bottom where there isn’t wood. That’s because he fixed them so that they can pop out, and we can change the filter in the vent when needed!
Once it was up, this is what we used for a top coat! I choose everything in mat, as farmhouse and shiny don’t mix well! You can choose whichever you’d like!
Here you see the two bottom pieces that just pop out from little hinges. He stained those last.
Here you can see more close up of the little hinge things that he bought that will hold the two bottom pieces in place, but still allow us to pop them out when needed! It also shows the bottom with the light and vent installed!
Here is what it looks like coming through the wall in the garage!
A video that I put on TikTok of it all unfolding in time-lapse! I just began on TikTok and I’m struggling,
so feel free to follow me! 🤣
Where we will be putting the microwave!
Done and done!!😍😍😍
