Refinished Hardwood Floors

Hey strangers! I know, it’s been awhile since I’ve written a new blog. No excuses, I just haven’t done it!🤦🏻‍♀️

I wanted to take the time today to finally show you what the process was like for us when we had our floors refinished back in August. Unfortunately, I can’t recommend the guys that we had do it, because we weren’t too happy with his work or his work ethic, but, they are finally done and my whole first floor looks a thousand time better!🥰

I took some video and pics of before and after without a filter or preset, so that you can see the true colors. Keep in mind, that if you decide to refinish instead of buying all new flooring, these tips are key:

1. It is less expensive! We ended up paying about the same as we would for the vinyl plank flooring that we were going to get, and VPF is like the least expensive flooring you can get. We have engineered hardwood flooring now, so it was nice that we were able to keep the real wood. It kept the value of our home also!

2. It takes much more time. For us it took about 7 days, but that’s because our guy didn’t put a third coat on of the top coat like he should have. On the other hand, there were only two of them and one of the guys only worked on the staircase. They also took like 3 and 4 hour food breaks!🤦🏻‍♀️ Hence the horrible work ethic.

3. It is extremely messy! We had to remove everything from the first floor that didn’t have tile. I then removed everything off of shelves. Dust was everywhere when all was said and done, so we were cleaning shelves, cabinets and walls after, before we could put anything back!

4. Choosing water based finish or oil based finish. We originally chose oil based because it’s much less expensive. But thanks to a fellow influencer friend of mine, whose husband owns his own floor refinishing business, she informed me that oil based not only takes days to dry, but over time, it changes the color of your flooring. So, we bit the bullet and paid the extra for the water based. It drys within a few hours, and you can get back into your house within the same night, compared to waiting days! And if I had to do this again in a year, after the money we spent, and chaos of 4 dogs and a cat, I think I would pull my hair out! 😂

Choosing a color was scary.😬 Our flooring was currently an orange color, which I hated, and once he began sanding, we learned that the floors were a red oak. That being said, the red oak was going to make taking any orange and red out harder! I knew I wanted something rustic, so whichever color I chose had to hide the red tones!

Here is a video of day one!
After sanding, they will put your options on the sanded wood to choose from! It’s not easy to imagine what the whole floor will look like, but I knew I didn’t want something too dark, but I love the touch of rustic grey! We ended up choosing number 3…Weathered Oak!
This is day 4! The only thing stained here is the railing on the stairs. My husband didn’t like it at first, but once it was all done, we were both happy with the color!
After one coat of satin finish on. There should be two to three. We called him back to do the second one!
You can see here that the steps were more red than the flooring below. Turned out that the steps were all red oak when the flooring was not. So we had him put a darker grey color on the steps to even it all out. It definitely worked!🙌🏻
So much better and all complete! 😍
Before…
After!😍

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to ask! I had so many questions before the process started, so I tried to cover what I could think of! Happy Sunday my friends!
