Character Counts

Raise your hand if you want to add character to your home, but you’re not quite sure how! Or, you want to, but you don’t want to spend a lot of money!

Some people are lucky enough to have built-in character in their homes! Maybe they bought a classic farmhouse or Victorian, where character is seen in every nook and cranny. Then there’s others, like me, whose house was built in 2012 and creativity is a must if you want that character that you crave!

Character to me, is built-in shelving, rounded doorways or archways with intricate moldings, and vintage doors. Something that screams cozy and lived in. Homes that at least look like they were built many years ago! Which leads me to this blog post. While I have mostly rounded archways in my home with pretty moldings, and French doors that lead out to our sunroom and Will’s office, I wanted more! Will did build the built-ins to our living room, which made a huge difference in there!

My style over the last couple of years has evolved from farmhouse, to modern farmhouse, to vintage/rustic cottage. It all happened so quickly and unintentionally, that it wasn’t until the last few months that I’ve seen my pictures on Instagram changing and that’s when I realized it! 🤣 I’ve even pondered changing my IG handle name recently, but because of all the work that would go into it, and the fact that my style still falls under the farmhouse realm, most of my followers told me to keep it! If my followers are happy with it, then the old saying applies…”If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”🤷🏻‍♀️

So here I am, always looking for ways to add more character, and while it’s not exactly cheap, it is a way to do it slowly and oh so beautifully! Doors in your home are relatively easy to replace and can add so much character! Especially with vintage looking doors! How are doors vintage looking you ask? Doors with glass panels or wooden doors with glass are the perfect touch of character, and can be found in so many places, whether at a yard sale or on Facebook marketplace like mine! If you’re local here in NC, there’s a guy on marketplace in Raleigh that sells all kinds of doors out of a storage unit that he owns, and they are all $300 a piece!😳 If you’ve been door shopping, you’ll know that’s a steal! So they’re out there and I am always looking for the perfect ones!

So far we bought one for our coat closet and one for the pantry that we’re making into a sliding door. Next I want to get one for our laundry room/mud room and I’d like to get a half glass paneled door to replace the door that leads out to our garage! And then, more than anything, I want a Dutch door to replace our front door!! I may be asking for that for my 50th bday in a couple weeks!😉

Here are some before and afters of just our hall closet alone! Once we get the pantry door up, I’ll show you that too!

Before…
During… as you’ll see we bought film to cover the mess in this closet that we now use as our dog room! I will link it below!
After
View down the hall from the master bedroom.

What do you guys think? Yay or nay? Do you see the difference just one door makes? Let me know in comments below!

The glass film can be found at The Home Depot! I used etched lace for an even more vintage flair, but there’s so many to choose from! It’s also so easy to put on! All you need is a spray bottle of water and a squeegee which comes with it!
